Remember the other day when I said I wanted a Lexus GS?

What if I said I might have found a one-owner, 80k mile, 2007 Infiniti M35 with the tech package for only $11,000, and it’s for sale literally in my neighborhood?

I’ve driven both the G and M cars, and man... while the materials aren’t quite up to the Lexus standard, I think it’s a better driving car than the GS350, even if slightly less powerful (although not much slower).

So I’m torn. As far as reliability and cost of ownership, they’re in the same ballpark. Same for amenities and features. The Datsun is slightly more raw while the Toyota is more refined, even boring. But both should go for another 10 years with little in the way of repairs, and both would tick every box on my criteria list. Comfortable, reliable, well-made, generally quick, and Japanese.

Hmm.

I literally saw the first M35 in years, once yesterday on my way home, and once this morning on the way to work. He was not driving conservatively, shall we say, and goddamn that noise when he nailed the throttle was heavenly.

Out on 71 East, too. I wonder if he’s your guy. Didn’t see a For Sale sign in the windows, though.

This is the first I’ve heard of Infiniti/Nissan reliability being on par with Lexus/Toyota.

I think the Infiniti is more “me”, or at least the “me” I’d rather be for those 2 hours a day. And I bet I can talk this dude down at least $500 since it needs a little reconditioning (it’s black with some swirl marks and a few scratches, tint is bubbling in a few spots).

Sorry, I can’t hear you over the sound of that exhaust! (srsly, though, all else being equal, it comes down to what you want to project — nouveau riche or Country Club, respectively.) A lot of people are like “who cares what others think?!” which was a position I held until my late 20s, compromising career choices and relationships in the process.

Basing this on Edmunds, Cars.com, and TrueDelta. The Lexus is of course the best, because Lexus, but most of the complaints have to do with accessories or regular wear and tear like switches and lights - generally easy to repair at home.
